Galloway is in the south west corner of Scotland and is the southernmost region of the country. To the west is the Mull of Galloway peninsula, the closest point to Ireland in mainland UK. Known as the ‘forgotten corner of Scotland’, offering wonderful scenery, many local attractions and peaceful locations, Galloway is well worth a visit.

The surrounding sea is warmed several degrees from the Gulf Stream and attracts seals, otters and a great variety of sea birds (RSPB reserve with puffins, gannets, etc), and above all the warm, almost frost-free air allows spectacular gardens to flourish – Glenwhan, Castle Kennedy, and the Logan Botanic Gardens flourish with plants normally found in the sub tropics.

Newton Stewart is the nearest town to the Stable Cottage and provides good local services, pubs and hotels plus an excellent, small “not for profit” Community Cinema. The Cairnsmore Estate is situated five miles from Newton Stewart, just off the A75 Dumfries to Stranraer route. It borders the Galloway Forest hills to one side and an un-spoilt upland area, the Cairnsmore of Fleet Nature Reserve.
