Arriving
at the sandstone viaduct of the private Cairnsmore Estate offers
an immediate ‘get away from it all' feeling. A clear burn runs
alongside the winding avenue that leads to Stable Cottage and
ahead the hills and forests emerge as you approach the Courtyard
archway to your destination.
Stable Cottage is a 200-year-old listed building that was originally part of
the stable block for the private Cairnsmore Estate, once the shooting estate
of the Dukes of Bedford. As soon as you drive through
the gates, along the avenue bordered by rhododendron and broad-leaf trees,
the surroundings evoke a by-gone time. The cottage’s fabulous and peaceful location
creates an ideal base for relaxing and exploring this quiet corner of Scotland.
There is wonderful walking in the surrounding area (highlighted in the Newton
Stewart Walkfest) and the footpath to the summit of Cairnsmore of Fleet (2,300
feet) is a short walk from the cottage. The enclosed garden is south facing and
a wonderful suntrap where red squirrels and greater spotted woodpeckers are frequent
visitors. The area offers varied interests, both for the
outdoor & wildlife enthusiasts and those who enjoy exploring the surrounding
market towns and coastal villages. The cottage was refurbished at the
beginning of 2010 with several measures to improve guest’s comfort, the most important being the Geothermal under floor
central heating system. Other improvements include a new bathroom (luxury double
ended bath with overhead shower), a wood-burning stove in the living room and
flagstone flooring in the
main living areas, maintaining a cosy cottage atmosphere..
